23 Jul Making Natural Paints

Half of my summer has gone by without having many paintings finished. But there has been many sketches, setting up my studio here in the French countryside (it is not fully ready yet, but I work there nevertheless, paying more attention to the canvas than the unfinished parts), and last but not least many ‘chemistry experiments’ making and painting with my own oils and natural pigments. Soon, I will reveal my first finished painting with these oil paints.

Preparing my own natural oil paints
Nowadays most traditional Indian painting styles utilize water soluble colors – either naturally prepared by the artists, or commercially available poster and acrylic paints. But the paints utilized by great masters in Europe have always been oils. They are considered the most durable and valued. Personally, ever since I first tried it, oil paint is my favorite of all. However, it is taking time and thought to figure out the best ways to utilize oils for painting in the style of Pichwai, Pattachitra or Kerala mural.

Here I have shown some of my home oil mixing, utilizing natural earth pigments, both Indian and European. And for the blue? It is pure, natural indigo, of course!
