12 Aug Sketching to Experiment and Grow
I have sketched for many years. I grew up in the pre-historical era of no smartphones and tablets. My free time was spent outdoors, or reading, writing a diary, doing handicrafts and also sketching. As a child, I sometimes tried to sketch realistically, but more often I sketched symbolically to express ideas.
Drawing is putting a line around an idea.
Henri Matisse
As a teenager and adult, I continued to sketch on the side. It was a fun thing to do, and I never thought much of it. A sketchbook is a place to experiment and grow, without pressure to achieve a particular standard, other than what feels right for the moment.
You can't do sketches enough. Sketch everything and keep your curiosity fresh.
John Singer Sargent
With many family responsibilities and changes in life, my sketching sometimes got pushed to the side. I tried to squeeze it in my busy life, with various degrees of success.
I got determined to dust off my sketchbooks and revived regular sketching this summer, inspired ‘108 days of Drawing’ at Bhakti Art Academy
I also started a digital sketchbook on Instagram to share selected sketches with fellow artists and all interested.
The fundamental thing about sketching is that it is about asking, not telling.
