Artist Statement

I am a France-based artist inspired by the sacred arts of India. After immersing myself in the philosophy and culture of India for many years and volunteering in diverse cultural projects across Europe, I ventured to India itself to personally experience its vibrant culture. Since 2020, I have been working on various visual projects presenting Indian culture. I firmly believe that contemporary artists can glean invaluable lessons from traditional and folk art. My ultimate aspiration is to create artworks that draw inspiration from timeless sacred art, infusing them with meaning and relevance for the modern world.

Artist Bio

Maïa Saint-Couleurs is an artist based in France and exploring the sacred arts of India. Introduced to Eastern philosophy in her childhood by her father, Maïa started to actively study and practice the spiritual philosophy and culture of India at the age of 18. Even though she had always been engaged in various creative and artistic activities since childhood, including music, creative writing, handicrafts and visual arts, and made some outstanding works for her high school art courses assignments, she went on to study science, since it was considered more serious and prestigious. She obtained bachelors in science and started in masters program, but eventually found it difficult to reconcile the values of spiritual philosophy and culture with the methods and approach of the hard sciences. After volunteering in various cultural projects around Europe while continuing to study and practice Indian spiritual culture, she spent nearly 5 years in India, gaining first hand experience in its vibrant and diverse culture, absorbing the mood and atmosphere and getting to know its people.
With the lockdowns of Covid-19 Maïa turned to a more serious study and practice of art, and for the first time she viewed art as a means she could use to share her experiences of India’s timeless spiritual and cultural heritage with the world. Since her return to Europe in 2020, she has been based in France and worked on various visual projects related to Indian culture. She constantly keeps learning from the masterclasses of traditional Indian artists, as well as the fundamental principles of art as taught in the Western academy. At times, there appears to be a significant divergence between Western-style contemporary art and diverse traditional art forms, such as those found in India. However, Maïa firmly believes that contemporary artists can glean invaluable lessons from various traditional and folk art styles. Her ultimate aspiration is to create artworks that draw inspiration from timeless sacred art, infusing them with meaning and relevance for the modern world.
